The stars never fail to shine on an awards show red carpet, but there are always a few brighter-than-bright spots that define the top trends of the evening. And this year the awards go to...

Embellished White

No ordinary white would do...the most memorable looks were adorned with a little extra. Academy Award Winner for Best Actress Julianne Moore dazzled in an organza and silk crepe Karl Lagerfeld gown embellished with white resin sequins, while Marion Cotillard stood out in bright white Dior. Last year's Best Supporting Actress Winner Lupita Nyong'o wore a pearl-encrusted white gown from Calvin Klein Collection, while Lady Gaga made a bold white statement in custom Azzedine Alaia, and Faith Hill shone in sleek white J. Mendel.

Sequins & Beads

But the women in white weren't the only ones who went with embellished looks. Nicole Kidman got attention for the red ribbon belting her sequined Louis Vuitton gown. The women of Best Picture Winner Birdman also went the sequins and beads route with Emma Stone in long-sleeved Elie Saab and Naomi Watts in shimmering black and silver Armani Priv, while Jennifer Aniston won raves for her glittering nude-hued Versace gown.

Strapless

And that red carpet staple, the strapless column dress, was out in full force. Rosamund Pike bloomed in strapless red Givenchy, while Kerry Washington's strapless Miu Miu gown popped with peplum. Laura Dern opted for strapless metallic Alberta Ferretti while her Wild onscreen daughter Reese Witherspoon took her look off the shoulder in black and white Tom Ford.
