Priory Tells Us About Their "Weekend"

Priory keeps working while everyone else enjoys their "Weekend"

The Loverboy lyrics "Everybody's working for the weekend..." ring particularly true for Brandon Rush and Kyle Sears (a.k.a. Priory) who joined musical forces in 2009 and just last month released their Weekend EP.

"'Weekend' is the single that's out currently," says Rush, "There's a theme that runs throughout the album, and it's the survival of our youth. It's a little bit raw, you know, because it's from personal experience. There wasn't a need to have justification...or even set out to sound like anybody or do anything specific."

And Priory is hoping their new release, not to mention their name in general, gets people talking. Rush says, "The word Priory...it's a rehab clinic -- biggest one in the world, I believe -- and it's in London. And it's also a place where the clergy live. We're not a religious band at all, but we just kind of like the controversy of the word."

While the "Weekend" EP was a long time coming, it was pretty much success at first sight when Rush and Sears began making music together, their signature sound a mix of electronic instrumentation and heavy folk guitar.

"I remember the first time we played music, it was just two acoustic guitars [and] it was in, like, thirty minutes we had written the foundation of a couple songs. So we hit it off and that was kind of the start. You know, we set in and started writing tunes," begins Rush, "Because the music scene wasn't so small, we packed out a place the first time around and got interest [for] our first gig. Right after that, [we] got our management and ended up signing with Warner 'cause they seemed like the most, you know, family-friendly band-centric label out there. And just a year ago, we were locked in our basement studio, no one knew or cared. So it's nice to actually have something happening."

As for what's happening next for the electro-pop duo... "We'll go home to LOUDWAR, our studio that we own for a little bit, and do some writing, coming up with new songs, and then back on the road again," shares Sears. No doubt they'll be riffing off each other the whole time and having some fun while they're at it...

Adds Rush, "Yeah, part of our life is continually writing. We're working on new material."

"Yeah, we like staying busy, for sure."

"Oh yeah." It's then that Rush playfully breaks into song, "Did you ever know that you're my hero? Did you ever know how much I care?" He points the microphone in Sears' direction to join in, jokingly bopping him in the face.

"Oh..." sings Sears, then, "I don't like that."
