If you haven’t joined the coconut craze yet, now is the time to start consuming this tropical fruit packed with nutrients. In honor of National Coconut Day (June 26), here are ways to enjoy it and reap its many health benefits.

Manages Blood Sugar Levels
Coconut water may improve blood sugar control. It also contains magnesium, which may increase insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels.

Nutritious and Packed with Antioxidants
Coconuts are rich in manganese, which supports enzyme function, and copper, which assists in bone formation and heart health. Coconuts are also high in insoluble fiber, and the meat is unique because of its high-fat content. It contains about 89% saturated fat. The meat also contains phenolic compounds, which are antioxidants that may help protect cells from oxidative damage.

Enhances Stamina
Coconut oil has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, and its lauric acid content helps promote a strong immune system. The oil can be applied topically on sore muscles for pain relief too. Coconut water is also a great replacement for sugary sports drinks when it comes time to replenish electrolytes and restore hydration.

Good for Your Waistline
Coconuts are low in carbs compared to many other fruits. Studies have shown that consuming the oil may help reduce your waist size. The oil also contains MCTs, which are medium-chain triglycerides that can be used as an energy source. MCTs are easy to digest and may help speed up metabolism too.

Improves Your Oral Health
Coconut oil may help get rid of harmful bacteria in the mouth that can cause bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease. Though there is no scientific data, there are claims that “oil pulling,” using coconut oil, is a way to purify the mouth.

Anti-Aging
Not only can the antioxidants found in coconuts help slow down the appearance of aging by protecting you from free radicals, but the oil can help stimulate collagen production in the body, lessening the appearance of wrinkles.

How To Enjoy It
You can eat the meat raw, drink it in milk or water form, or use the oil when cooking.
