Picking products that keep our homes cool, clean and, well, homey can be a tough proposition. Do we stick with the tried-and-true or explore new options? Below are two innovations that deliver the performance you expect, with some out-of-the-box twists--and crucial eco-consciousness--that you'll find you can't live without.

Save Your Energy

So often homeowners have to decide between form and function. Now, thanks to an innovative new heating and cooling system from LG, those days are over. "LG has a new product that heats and cools our home. It's called the Art Cool Gallery, and it's a picture frame that sits about an inch and a half from the wall. You can put any kind of artwork in there. It heats and cools your home by coming out from the back of the picture frame. And the best part about this is that it doesn't look like some sort of bulky unit, and there's no duct work. You don't have to run anything through your house. And that's where you lose a lot of your energy, is through that duct work," says DIY home expert Brian Kelsey.

The beauty of this is that it's a "split system," meaning that you have a unit that sits outside your house which can feed anywhere from 2-8 different units inside. You can control one room or you can control the whole house. This is a very efficient system because you don't have duct work, which is where most energy loss occurs, according to Kelsey. "This way you've got a direct system, which has an energy star rating as well. So between all that it's a win win situation and you're going to save a lot of money," says Kelsey.

Save Your Water

"One of the things that people have been coming to me about is changing out their fixtures. They want something that's going to save water, to think about the environment, but there are not a lot of products that can do that," says Kelsey.

Till now. "Moen has a full line of eco-performance kitchen and bathroom faucets and showerheads that save water without sacrificing any of their performance. Check out the Walden Pull-Out Kitchen Faucet with Moen's exclusive spot-resist Stainless Finish which helps resist fingerprints so it stays clean. It's built really well and comes with a matching soap dispenser as well," he says.

For the shower, people often complain there's not enough water pressure or their shower is leaking. Now there's a solution in the Wynford eco-performance showerhead. "Here it is in brushed nickel, but it comes in all sorts of finishes. And again you'd never know that you're saving water with these products because they're built so well and they look great. Another win win situation," says the licensed contractor and homebuilder.
