The holiday season is the perfect time to update your kitchen with the best materials and smartest design schemes.

Perfectly Customized Cabinets

"You have to think about how you're going to use the kitchen," says Sarah Fishburne, Director of Trend and Design for Home Depot. "The way you think through it is, are you a busy mom? Are you a baker or a chef? Maybe you have large, oversized trays that you need to store? Because all those go into designing the perfect kitchen for you," she says.

Choose a designer that has many options to suit your needs, such as Studio 1904 Cabinet line from Thomasville, which boasts twelve different cabinet styles from raised panel to recessed to slab. "This is an edited selection that can help you narrow down what your needs are. It comes in multiple stain options as well as two opaque paint colors and two glaze options. So this is a fantastic and affordable line of cabinets that we're doing," says Fishburne.

Just in time for the holidays, Home Depot offers new lines of cabinets and countertops sure to ready your kitchen for the hubub of the holidays.

Durable, Decorative Countertops

Fishburne says that a lot of people don't really think about the counter other than that they want it to look a certain way. But your countertop takes so much wear and tear, so a durable product is really important.

"Dekton is the most durable countertop on the marketplace. It's stain resistant, heat-resistant as well as scratch-resistant. So think about moving those pots and pans around on the countertop you're not going to have the scratches. Or if you're using vinegar with is a very high staining material on a lot of natural materials it won't leave a ring. So those are fantastic ways to update."

Dekton also has multiple styles that resemble the look of natural materials like woods, stones, concrete, but without the accompanying upkeep requirements.

Top Kitchen Trends

High contrast looks--think black and white--are on the way out, according to the interior designer. Gaining traction now are more tonal experiences where you're layering colors in the same palettes together. "Whites continue to be very popular. We've seen a shift into warm greys. Those are brown-based greys. And then we're starting to see the cool greys as well coming in. And that really does play from the floor all the way up to the cabinets, countertops and backsplashes, even the paint, keeping it all in this very similar palette that really creates this lovely, tactile experience," Fishburne adds.

If you install right now before Oct. 26, a countertop, you'll have it in before Thanksgiving. You can also choose your cabinets by Oct. 16 and have those installed by Christmas.
