Nearly 200 organizations—civic, religious, youth, climate, and environmental—have signed a letter to New York governor, Andrew Cuomo, asking him to stop the fracked gas pipeline the Williams company wants to build beneath New York City’s Lower Harbor. Protestors of the pipeline gathered for a short rally then marched across the street to deliver the signed letter to the governor’s Manhattan office at 633 Third Avenue on November 2nd in New York City.

Those against the Williams Northeastern Supply Enhancement project that will carry fracked gas for 23 miles beneath New York Harbor before connecting with an existing pipeline running into the Rockaways, claim It would pose a threat to sea life such as endangered Atlantic sturgeon and the humpback whales that have recently returned to the area.

They also state the construction would churn up industrial toxins like arsenic, lead, and PCBs that have rested undisturbed on the sea floor for decades. And it would be built by a company whose projects have killed and injured people with impunity. Finally, those opposing the project believe it would contribute to climate change and storms like Hurricane Sandy, which decimated the very region the pipeline would run through.
