How to get a healthy smile? It starts with something not everyone thinks about, enamel. Celebrity dentist, Dr. Daniel Naysan, one of the country’s leading cosmetic dentists told us how to get a healthy smile.

A recent survey conducted with OnePoll in partnership with Pronamel found that 35% of people don’t know the true function of enamel, which is the strong, white outer layer of teeth. Over time, acids in your diet such as citrus, seltzer, green juices, vinegar and wine can weaken your enamel through a process called demineralization. As enamel wears away, it exposes the yellow dentin underneath, discoloring and dulling a healthy smile. Unfortunately, once enamel is gone it does not grow back, making it that much more imperative to help repair and protect the enamel you have.

Instead of trying to cut acidic foods from your diet to help minimize enamel damage, Dr. Naysan recommends his patients use Pronamel’s latest innovation, Pronamel Intensive Enamel Repair, twice a day. It works by helping lock in fluoride and calcium, vital minerals that are essential to rehardening enamel deep into the surface of your teeth to help repair micro damage and promote remineralization. It also protects from future acid erosion by inhibiting the demineralization of enamel, ultimately leaving teeth strong and more protected with twice daily brushing. Get it online and at major retailers nationwide. For more information head to pronamel.com.

What else should we be doing to protect enamel? Allow 30 minutes before and after eating, to brush, as eating acidic foods softens enamel and brushing immediately wears away the softened enamel- so consider using a straw to drink acidic beverages.
