Oscars move to YouTube starting in 2029
The Academy Awards are officially leaving traditional broadcast television behind. Beginning in 2029, the Oscars will stream live for free worldwide on YouTube, marking one of the most significant shifts in the show’s 90-plus-year history. The move follows a recent auction of future broadcast rights, with YouTube outbidding ABC—owned by Disney—which has been the home of the ceremony for decades. Under the new agreement, YouTube has secured exclusive global streaming rights in a multi-year deal running through 2033. The transition signals a bold new era for the Oscars, which—like many awards shows—has faced declining TV viewership in recent years.
The Muppet Show 50th Anniversary Special set to air early 2026
Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and the entire Muppet gang are set to reunite for a one-night television event celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Muppet Show. The special will honor the iconic variety series, which originally aired from 1976 to 1981 and became a cultural phenomenon with its mix of comedy, music, and celebrity guest stars. The anniversary special will feature classic Muppet humor alongside new musical moments, with pop star Sabrina Carpenter joining the festivities as a special guest. Adding to the excitement, Seth Rogen is involved in the project as an executive producer, helping to bring a modern comedic touch while staying true to the spirit of Jim Henson’s beloved creations. Catch it on February 4 on ABC and streaming on Disney+.
